Bananas, Chocolate, Coffee and handbags! Celebrate World Fair Trade day and the opportunity to learn more about global producers. Chicagoan’s join with more than 1000 other fair trade cities around the world to recognize the growing movement for ethical consumption. The event, co-sponsored by Chicago Fair Trade and the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, will feature a global marketplace with 20 fair trade vendors selling products that protect the environment and pay producers a living wage, interactive activities at the Global Action booth, and West African drum music.
Tuesday’s Noon Program features WBEZ’s World View host Jerome McDonnell as emcee, with remarks by the Trade Consul of South Africa. A fair trade cocoa farmer from Ghana will be present, providing insight into the global cocoa industry and the challenge to eliminate child labor. The Wednesday program’s emcee Emanuel Kuntzelman of Greenheart will highlight fair trade’s links to the sustainability movement and include remarks by Chicago’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Karen Weigert and Pushpika Freitas of Marketplace: Handwork of India.
